The Letter in the Rain
The rain had been falling over Kiyosato since early morning.
The station was quiet, and the mountains were hidden behind a thick curtain of mist.
I walked slowly along a familiar road, trying to remember what this place had looked like thirty years ago.
Then I noticed something beneath an old wooden sign.
It was a small envelope, soaked by the rain.
There was no name on it.
But somehow, I felt that I had seen the handwriting before.
I opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was only one sentence.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t wait forever.”
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
I remembered a girl who had once walked beside me under the summer sky.
We had promised to meet again someday.
But life carried us in different directions, and that “someday” never came.
I looked around, but there was nobody on the empty road.
Only the sound of rain filled the air.
Then I noticed something strange.
The letter was completely wet, but the ink was perfectly dry.
And at the bottom of the page, there was a date.
It was tomorrow’s date.
I stood there for a long time, listening to the rain.
Maybe it was only a coincidence.
Or maybe someone, somewhere, had remembered the promise too.
I folded the letter and put it back into my pocket.
Then I walked toward the station without looking back.
Behind me, the rain became a little heavier.
And for just a moment, I thought I heard a woman’s voice whisper my name.
I stopped.
But when I turned around, there was only the empty road.
Perhaps some memories never really disappear.
They simply wait somewhere, quietly, until the rain brings them back.
The Morning After the Rain
That night, I stayed at a small pension near Kiyosato Station.
The building was old, but it had a warm and quiet atmosphere.
Rain tapped softly against the window throughout the night.
I placed the mysterious letter on the desk beside my bed.
I kept looking at the date written at the bottom.
Tomorrow.
明日。
I wondered who had written it, and why it had found me after all these years.
Eventually, I fell asleep listening to the rain.
When I opened my eyes, the room was strangely bright.
The rain had stopped.
I looked at the clock.
It was exactly seven o’clock.
For some reason, I immediately remembered the letter.
I reached for it.
But the letter was gone.
I searched under the bed, inside my bag, and even in my coat pocket.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something on the window.
Someone had written a single word in the moisture on the glass.
“Station.”
My heart began to beat faster.
I quickly got dressed and went downstairs.
The owner of the pension was preparing breakfast.
“Did someone come here early this morning?” I asked.
The owner looked at me for a moment.
Then he quietly said,
“No. You were the first person to come downstairs.”
I looked toward the window.
The sky was beginning to clear above the mountains.
For the first time in many years, I felt that Kiyosato was asking me to follow a memory.
So I finished my coffee, thanked the owner, and walked toward the station.
I didn’t know what I would find there.
But somehow, I knew that someone was waiting for me.
And this time, I decided not to be late.
The Last Train
When I arrived at Kiyosato Station, the morning mist was still covering the mountains.
The platform was almost empty.
I looked around, wondering what I was supposed to find.
Then I noticed an old bench at the far end of the platform.
It was the same place where we had once sat together.
I slowly walked toward it.
There was something underneath it.
A small wooden box.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
It showed two young people standing in front of Kiyosato Station.
Me and her.
On the back of the photograph, there was a short message.
“I knew you would come back someday.”
I stared at those words for a long time.
Then I noticed another line underneath.
“Please don’t look for me.”
My heart sank.
For a moment, I wanted to know everything.
Where she had gone.
Why she had disappeared.
And whether she had ever remembered me.
But beneath those questions was something I already knew.
Some people are meant to stay in our memories, not in our lives.
I gently put the photograph back into the box.
Then I heard the sound of an approaching train.
The morning train slowly entered the station.
For a moment, I thought I saw her standing by the window.
She was smiling.
I blinked.
She was gone.
Only the reflection of the morning light remained on the glass.
I smiled quietly.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
The train disappeared into the mist.
And for the first time in thirty years, I no longer felt that our story had ended sadly.
Perhaps we had simply reached the last station of our memories.
I left the old photograph on the bench.
Then I walked back toward the pension.
The sun finally came through the clouds.
The rain was over.
But I knew I would never forget that rainy morning in Kiyosato.
Because sometimes, saying goodbye is not the end of a story.
Sometimes, it is simply the moment when we finally learn how to remember someone with a smile.
