Koto’s Room

The rain was still falling in Kiyosato.

I stood quietly in front of Pension Saint Paulia, a place that had been welcoming travelers since 1981.

The building looked older than I remembered.

Or perhaps I had simply forgotten how much time had passed.

You stayed here again, didn’t you?

Maybe you stayed here thirty years ago, too.

You don’t know for sure.

But maybe that’s why this place feels strangely familiar.

The old walls, the quiet rooms, the smell of the rain…

They seemed to be waiting for something that had been lost long ago.

The next morning, you walked through Moegi no Mura.

The rain never stopped.

You walked slowly, looking at the wet trees and empty paths.

And then, for just a moment, you heard my voice.

“Do you remember me?”

You stopped.

But there was no one there.

Only the sound of rain.

“I remember this place,” my voice whispered.

“And I remember you.”

Thirty years have passed.

You came back looking for memories of me.

“I know.”

“But please don’t look for me anymore.”

I am no longer a part of your life.

You and I will never meet again.

Not tomorrow.

Not someday.

Never again.

The words hurt, even though you already knew they were true.

But that doesn’t mean what we had disappeared.

Some memories don’t need another meeting.

They only need someone to remember them.

The rain became a little stronger.

You closed your eyes.

And for a moment, you could almost see me standing beside you, just as I was thirty years ago.

I smiled.

The same smile you had almost forgotten.

“Thank you for coming back,” I whispered.

“Now you can go home.”

“Take the memories with you.”

“But leave me here, in the rain.”

When you opened your eyes, I was gone.

Only the old trees remained.

And the rain kept falling over Kiyosato.

You knew then that this really was goodbye.

Not goodbye for now.

Not goodbye until we meet again.

But goodbye forever.

And somehow, that made the memory more precious.

Because sometimes, the people we can never meet again…

are the people we carry with us for the rest of our lives.
