The Station Waiting for the Last Train

There was a small station in a mountain town where trains no longer stopped.

Moss covered the roof of the station building, and grass had grown over the tracks.

The timetable had not been updated for many years.

The people in the town called it an abandoned station.

But every night, a small light came on inside the old station building.

No one knew who turned it on.

One autumn night, I visited the station.

It was a little after eleven o’clock.

Whenever the wind blew, the old sign on the platform swayed gently.

“Who could it be waiting for at a time like this?”

I whispered those words to myself.

Then I heard a faint sound coming from inside the station building.

Click… click… click…

It was an old wall clock.

The clock, which had been stopped for years, was moving again.

Its hands pointed to 11:27.

At that moment, I heard the sound of a train in the distance.

Clack… clack… clack…

I stared down the tracks.

A white mist slowly approached from the darkness.

I couldn’t see a train.

But the sound was getting closer.

Clack… clack… clack…

And then, suddenly, the sound disappeared.

Silence returned to the station.

“Isn’t it here yet?”

A voice came from behind me.

I turned around and saw a woman sitting on a bench.

She was wearing an old coat, with her hands resting quietly on her knees.

“Are you waiting for the train too?”

She smiled softly.

“Yes. I’ve been waiting for a very long time.”

“How long?”

She was silent for a moment.

“Since a very long time ago.”

Her words somehow touched my heart.

She looked down the tracks.

“I made a promise.”

“With whom?”

“With someone very important to me.”

She said nothing more.

She simply continued to watch the station clock.

11:27.

The hands of the clock had stopped there.

Then I heard the sound of a train again.

This time, I could hear it clearly.

Clack… clack… clack…

A small light appeared in the mist.

The woman stood up.

“It’s here…”

I looked down the tracks.

But there was no train.

Instead, a man was standing there.

He was carrying an old suitcase.

When he saw the woman, he smiled quietly.

She smiled back.

Neither of them said a word.

They simply walked slowly toward each other.

As they passed me, the woman turned around.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

She didn’t answer.

Then she disappeared into the mist with the man.

And then—

そして――

The station clock began to move for the first time.

11:28.

The next morning, I returned to the station.

The light in the station building was gone.

The old clock had stopped again.

And on the bench, there was a single piece of paper.

There was only one sentence written on it.

“The last train comes for those who are waiting.”

I quietly folded the paper.

A station where no trains came anymore.

A platform where no one got on or off.

And yet, I couldn’t help thinking—

Maybe that station had never really been a place for trains.

Maybe it was a place where someone who had waited for a long time could meet the person they loved one last time.

And tonight, just as before—

A small light will come on at the abandoned station.

Someone is waiting again.

Waiting for the last train.
