The Summer We Left Behind

It was 1996.

We were young, and we had no idea how quickly time could disappear.

That summer, we came to Kiyosato together.

The air was cool, the sky was blue, and everything seemed brighter than it does now.

We walked through the quiet streets, laughing about things that were not important at all.

But somehow, those meaningless conversations became some of the most precious memories of my life.

We stopped at a little café and shared a cup of coffee.

She smiled across the table, and for a moment, I thought that days like this would last forever.

We walked beneath the trees, taking pictures and talking about our dreams.

Neither of us knew what the future would bring.

We simply believed there would always be another summer.

Another train.

Another trip.

Another chance to come back.

But life doesn’t always keep the promises we make when we are young.

Years passed.

The places we visited changed.

The people we once knew moved on.

And somewhere along the way, we lost touch with each other.

I came back to Kiyosato many years later.

The mountains were still there.

The wind still moved through the trees.

But she was no longer beside me.

I stood there quietly and looked at the same sky we had once looked at together.

For a moment, I could almost hear her laughter again.

It felt as though thirty years had disappeared in a single breath.

Maybe memories are strange things.

They don’t ask permission before returning.

A smell.

A song.

A rainy afternoon.

A familiar road.

And suddenly, someone who has been gone for decades is standing beside you again.

I don’t know where she is now.

I don’t know if she ever remembers those days.

But I remember.

And perhaps that is enough.

Because some people leave our lives, but they never completely leave our memories.

That summer in Kiyosato is still there.

Forever young.

Forever smiling.
