歯車付き緩急車「ピフ」――碓氷峠を支えた木造車両
This small wooden railway car once played a very important role on the steep Usui Pass between Yokokawa and Karuizawa.
この小さな木造車両は、かつて横川と軽井沢を結ぶ急勾配の碓氷峠で、とても重要な役割を果たしていました。
It was known as a “Pifu” (ピフ), a special brake van equipped with a pinion gear for the Abt rack railway system.
「ピフ」と呼ばれたこの車両は、アプト式ラック鉄道のために、歯車（ピニオン）を備えた特殊な緩急車でした。
The Usui Pass railway was extraordinarily steep, so ordinary brakes alone were not sufficient to safely control a train.
碓氷峠の鉄道は非常に急な勾配が続いていたため、通常の車輪に作用するブレーキだけでは、列車を安全に制御することが難しかったのです。
A rack rail was installed between the running rails, and the pinion gear on the Pifu engaged with it. The gear could also be braked, providing additional braking power on the mountain railway.
そこで線路の中央にはラックレールが設けられ、ピフの歯車をこれに噛み合わせました。さらに、この歯車にもブレーキを作用させることで、急勾配を走る列車の制動力を補っていました。
The Pifu was particularly important when trains descended the pass. It helped prevent the train from running away on the steep slope and provided an additional measure of safety.
特に重要だったのが、碓氷峠を下る列車の安全でした。急勾配で列車が逸走することを防ぐため、ピフは補助制動車として大きな役割を果たしました。
The vehicle in this photograph is a fascinating example of early railway engineering. Its wooden body, heavy underframe, exposed mechanical equipment, and pinion gear tell the story of a time when railway technology had to confront the mountain directly.
この写真に残された車両は、黎明期の鉄道技術を今に伝える貴重な存在です。木造の車体、頑丈な台枠、むき出しになった機械装置、そして歯車。その姿からは、鉄道技術が険しい山そのものに挑んでいた時代を感じることができます。
The markings on the body include “ピ30”, indicating its later classification. The photograph also preserves the distinctive appearance of the car in remarkable detail.
車体には「ピ30」という表記が見られ、後年の形式を示しています。木材の質感や扉、金具、台車、歯車に至るまで、当時の姿を非常に鮮明に見ることができる貴重な写真です。
The Pifu cars disappeared from the Usui Pass after the development of more advanced braking systems, but their role should not be forgotten.
より進んだ制動方式が普及すると、歯車付き緩急車はその役目を終えていきました。しかし、碓氷峠の鉄道を安全に走らせるために、この小さな車両が果たした役割を忘れることはできません。
Today, almost all traces of these wooden brake cars have vanished. That is why photographs such as this one are more than simple records—they are windows into a vanished railway world.
現在では、このような木造の歯車付き緩急車が現役で走っていた姿を見ることはできません。だからこそ、この一枚の写真は単なる記録写真ではなく、失われた鉄道の世界を私たちの前に蘇らせてくれる「窓」のような存在なのです。
Looking at this little wooden car, one can almost imagine the sound of the pinion biting into the rack rail, the hiss of steam, and the echo of a train climbing the legendary Usui Pass.
この小さな木造車両を眺めていると、歯車がラックレールに噛み合う音、蒸気の音、そして伝説の碓氷峠を列車が登っていく響きまで、今にも聞こえてくるような気がします。
