A Quiet Signal
Every morning, the signal light on the hill blinked exactly three times. No one knew why it was there, and no one remembered who built it. It had been blinking for as long as the town could remember.
Most people stopped noticing it. It became part of the background, like the sound of wind or distant traffic. But one morning, Eli stopped walking.
He felt it before he understood it. The light was still blinking, but something was different. Not brighter. Not faster. Just closer.
Eli climbed the hill that day. The path was narrow and quiet, and with every step, the noise of the town faded behind him.
At the top, there was no machine. No tower. Just a small mirror, standing alone, catching the morning sun.
When the light blinked, Eli realized the truth. The signal was never sent to the town. It was sent from it.
The mirror reflected whatever stood before it. For years, the town had passed by without looking.
Eli looked. And for the first time, the light stayed on.
